American Le Mans in Long Beach this weekend

BMW Rahal Letterman M3 GT2

Rahal Letterman BMW M3 GT2 coming off St. Petersburg success

Continuing along this weeks noticeably BMW theme, the American Le Mans Series picks up again this weekend in Long Beach, with the Rahal Letterman team hoping to podium again following their second place finish in St. Petersburg.

“Southern California's car enthusiasts love BMW and especially the M3, and our team is prepared to give them a great show,” said Martin Birkmann, BMW of North America Motorsports Manager. “We picked up our pace at St. Pete and a podium finish is an excellent result. We continue ironing out the reliability issues with the new M3 and are hopeful to finish with both cars in the points."

Test sessions began yesterday, with official practice scheduled for 9:00 to 9:40 a.m. today. There will also be a 25-minute qualifying session this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The race starts at 4:15 p.m. tomorrow but will be televised from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday on ABC.

Audi's "Truth in 24" now available in HD

You have two choices now when downloading Audi's "Truth in 24" documentary from iTunes. Apple has now made available an HD version of the movie from Chicago-based Intersport and NFL Films.

I just watched it and, for Audi fans and racing buffs in particular, it's an outstanding documentary. Jason Statham did a terrific job with the voice overs without being an intrusion.

Unfortunately, the last I checked, it was only available to download from iTunes in the U.S. Hopefully that will be rectified soon for Audi's huge global audience.

Patrón Highcroft Racing launches new online fan initiatives

Patron Highcroft Acura

ALMS team to use Facebook and Twitter to better reach their fans
There's no doubt that social media has grown by leaps and bounds, more so in the last year with the introduction of Twitter. That growth now includes the world of auto racing.

Patrón Highcroft Racing recognized the importance of connecting with fans through social media and has launched a larger online presence, providing fans an easier way to connect through Facebook and Twitter.

The significance of this goes beyond just providing insight into the team and its activities. It gives the team and their primary sponsors a moment, however brief, to communicate their brands. Through social media, they have the unique opportunity to take better charge of their brands and control the message. Why let someone else talk to your fans when you can, and should, do it.

I'd love to hear from you about other race teams taking advantage of social media. Let me know by leaving a comment below and I'll build a reference list for race fans.

If you're interested in being a fan of the team, you can visit their Facebook as well as their Twitter profiles.

Successful fundraiser for Wheels of Wellness

Ford GT40 Gulf livery

Not unlike the Concorso Arizona I attended a couple of months ago, this past Sunday's Wheels of Wellness proved to be a great event and a successful fundraiser for The Wellness Community.

Following my preview post from last week, the Wheels of Wellness not only benefited from great weather but from an outstanding collection of classic race cars.

Wheels of Wellness raised $15,000 for The Wellness Community, benefiting their cancer support and education programs.

I have posted additional photos to Ridestory on Flickr. It was amazing to see all of these cars together, in one place.

Audi R10 TDI at Road Atlanta

Audi R10 TDI

This weekends "Petit Le Mans" debuts the "Green Challenge"
The American Le Mans Series heads to Road Atlanta this weekend, with the Audi R10 TDI looking to score its third consecutive victory.

The 1000-mile "Little Le Mans" was introduced in 1998, with Audi making its first appearance at Road Atlanta in 2000. Audi has won the race every year since, with six Audi R8 wins, followed by wins the last two years in the R10 TDI.

Audi has recorded 20 wins with the R10 TDI, 16 of them in the American Le Mans Series.

Audi R10 TDI"I was immediately impressed when I drove the car for the first time," remembers Lucas Luhr, who won the Drivers’ Championship with Marco Werner with two races remaining in the 2008 ALMS LMP1 class.

"It’s absolutely fascinating just how the TDI engine pushes."

Included in this weekends race, competitors will be taking part for the first time in the "Green Challenge", a special classification that takes into consideration fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

TDI launches for America
In addition, Audi has announced the launch of their TDI technology for the American market with the availability of the 2009 Q7 3.0 TDI.

In October, the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI will take part in the Audi Mileage Marathon, a two week trek across the United States to showcase their efficient diesel technology.

The Mileage Marathon will be made up of 13 stages, starting in New York and finishing up in Los Angeles. The 4,800 mile trek starts October 5 and concludes on the 20th, with 184 drivers representing North America, Europe and Asia.

This is an excellent example of proven racing technology making its way into the every day car. Will this help American car buyers accept diesel more readily? Only time will tell. Diesel hasn't exactly taken off here as it has in the rest of the world.

Steve Haas has an excellent article on the Mota Blog regarding diesels, its unexpected competition, the hybrid, and its chances of being accepted now after past failures. It's a good read and makes you think, just how green do I want to be?

Grand-Am Rolex series acquired by NASCAR

Grand-Am Rolex Prototype

A few days ago, the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Cars Series announced that they are being acquired by NASCAR.

According to the press release, both race organizations will continue to operate independently but resources such as communications, marketing, research and public relations will be shared.

This is a win-win for the Grand-Am Rolex series. Not only will it see a huge influx of talent and support but it will get the marketing might of NASCAR to back the series up.

Folding Grand-Am into NASCAR really makes a lot of sense though. Two well-known NASCAR team owners, Chip Ganassi and Richard Childress, both have Grand-Am teams. Plus NASCAR drivers Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Kyle Petty, Bobby Labonte, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kurt Busch and Jeff Gordon have all helped in some way with the growth of the Grand-Am Series.

"This combination of resources will benefit Grand-Am and NASCAR, their competitors and fans as the two companies work together to enhance the two sports," said Jim France, Grand-Am founder and Vice Chairman of NASCAR.

The final race of the Grand-Am Rolex series, the SunRichGourmet.com 1000, is the weekend of September 19-21 at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.

The current unofficial standings puts drivers Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett of Chip Ganassi Racing in the points lead with 386. Chip Ganassi Racing leads the team point standings as well.

What I find encouraging among the points scoring is Pontiac's lead among all engine manufacturers in both the Daytona Prototype's and Grand Touring cars. This is a fact probably lost by many but shouldn't be. Pontiac-powered chassis' are beating out the likes of Lexus, Ford, Porsche and BMW.

We'll have to wait and see how everything shakes out after the final race but it should be interesting. Is it just me or is it becoming more common for the final race to decide driver and manufacturer titles? This kind of competition is great for motor sports though. It helps build the fan base and makes it more exciting. And there's nothing wrong with that!

Porsche's V8 echoes across the 'Ring

Porsche RS Spyder on the Nürburgring

Race fans this past weekend were treated to the incredible sound of the RS Spyder's V8. The 220,000 fans who attended the 24 hour race on the Nürburgring Nordschleife watched the two Porsche's turn demo laps, no doubt looking forward to the Le Mans Series race in August.

Porsche factory drivers Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas each piloted an RS Spyder around the 'Ring.

“These two laps are hard to describe,” said Bernhard.

Dumas added, “With this car on this track – that was one of my most wonderful experiences in motorsport.” Both drivers piloted 911 GT3 RSR's during the 24 hours of Nürburgring.

“You could hear the V8 sound of the RS Spyder for almost a minute before it flew by. It gave me goosebumps,” a race fan said, describing the sound of the RS Spyder's.

Hybrid outlasts the 'Ring

Gumpert Apollo

We wanted to take a moment and quickly update our readers regarding our previous post about the hybrid Apollo that competed over the weekend in the Nürburgring 24 hour race in Germany.

In a press release following the race, Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur said, "In front of over 200,000 motorsport fans, the Apollo showed that hybrid technology has good prospects in motorsport. At 3pm, the Apollo, piloted by Heinz-Harald Frentzen, crossed the finish line, powered only by the electric engine. Frentzen was assisted by Dirk Müller, Dominik Schwager and Mark Engels."

Making headlines here is, of course, a hybrid-powered race car. The only thing that has come close in recent history is Audi's diesel-powered R10. No, the Audi's not a hybrid but it doesn't use conventional racing fuels either.

Hats off to a race team willing to try something new but, even more so, a team willing to take on the big boys. They didn't have the technical and financial backing of the manufacturer-backed teams yet they competed and finished. Impressive.

What would you bid for this Porsche?

Steve McQueen Porsche 908

Steve McQueen's Porsche 908/2 on the auction block

Another of Steve McQueen's automotive treasures will be available to the highest bidder this summer, courtesy of Bonhams & Butterfields'.

The gem is McQueen's Porsche 908/2, the car he drove and nearly won the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring, finishing just seconds behind Mario Andretti. Andretti had his hands full in the closing laps, pushing his Ferrari to the limit, managing to pass McQueen in the second to last lap. Powered by a 3.0-liter air-cooled flat-8 rated at 350 hp, the car is expected to sell for as much as $2 million. The auction is August 15 in Carmel Valley, California.

As we've seen with previous auctions such as this, the car nearly always sells for more than what is projected. Last August, McQueen's 1963 Ferrari Lusso sold for twice as what was expected. And just last week we wrote about James Coburn’s 1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder selling for over $10 million.

An additional historical tidbit about this car. It was used as a camera mount during filming of the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, footage McQueen used for his 1971 movie, "Le Mans". All in all, the car competed at Le Mans five times.

And, as we've done previously, we'll keep an eye on this car. The final selling price should be interesting.

Can a hybrid beat a Porsche?

Gumpert Apollo

Hybrid engine technology has made its way to the track for the Nürburgring 24 hour race in Germany. Formally christened the Green Hell by race car river Jackie Stewart, the Nürburgring has grown to be much more than a race track after taking on a life of its own through the years. But over the course of 24 hours, manufacturers and drivers will battle this weekend, hoping to be crowned king of the 'Ring.

Apollo hybridOne of the private teams, with former Formula 1 driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Dirk Muller, have entered a hybrid based on the Gumpert Apollo. The race car is powered by both a 100 kW electric motor and a 3.3 liter V8 twin-turbo gasoline engine, together producing a total of 630 hp.

Frentzen see's an opportunity for motor sports to take the lead in furthering the development of hybrid technologies.

“Motorsports can not ignore the necessity to save energy. I see a chance that our sport will go back to the forefront of technical development, making cars outside of the racetrack much more energy efficient,” said Frentzen.

In a race such as this, reliability is the deciding factor. Unfortunately, they will be battling Porsche, the endurance race champs. There will be 34 Porsche GT3 RSR's on the starting grid, making it the most popular car among competitors. Such a huge showing by one manufacturer means just one thing...success. Porsche has been winning races for decades and continues to prove to be a wise investment among race teams the world over.

The hybrid Apollo has it's work cut out for it.
