Motion Products, Inc. provides restoration services and more on behalf of their customers which include very serious collectors and discerning individuals with luxury, classic and exotic cars. They provide other services for their clients such as careful transportation of cars to vintage races and Concours events where the cars may be on display or actually entered in competition for Best of Show or Best in Class. Quite often, the cars they have worked on win high honors. In fact, they brought Four Ferrari’s to the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on behalf of their owners including the Ferrari 250GTO that won first place. MPI also provides pit crew services to their clients both on and off the track. Many times, they act on behalf of the car owner who could not be present with the car, but wanted the opportunity to enter it in a special event.

Just a few of Motion Products' client cars. The beautiful 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is in the foreground.

The MPI/Borrani Americas team are passionate motor sport enthusiasts and keep an active schedule throughout the year that includes races, Concours and national club meets which allows them to routinely engage with the car realm. Several members of the staff have been known to enter their personal cars for fun or competition. No matter who the car belongs to, you can bet they are handled with expert care.

Early on, Motion Products, Inc. identified the value of putting Borrani wheels on vintage Ferrari and other cars, particularly those that are routinely shown in competition. Upon exploring they realized that there is a strong interest in the product across the United States and across the entire continent. They have formed Borrani Americas and have become the official distributor for the whole of North America, providing excellent consultative customer service throughout the process from order to delivery to installation. Borrani wheels are now available for select models of Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Fiat and Jaguar and they probably have plans to fit additional marques down the road.

Shown above is a very cool video from Motion Products showcasing their preparation and trailering of client cars on the way to the 2012 Cavallino Classic.

Following is just snapshot of the cars they’ve worked on and presented at the Classic.

1953 Ferrari 340 America
The Ferrari America and Superamerica are a series of touring cars built in limited quantities in the 1950s and 1960s. They were often found with custom coachwork to back up their large V12 engine. This 340 America was one of the five in a collection shown at the 2011 Quail Motorsports Gathering. It has an alloy Ghia body which is unique as Ghia didn’t body many cars. MPI received this Ferrari as a racecar and restored to its built sheet.

1962 Ferrari GTO
1st GTO built
The Ferrari 250 GTO is one of the most famous and most desired collector models. Produced from 1962-1964 this Ferrari was the first built and to its most recent credits won first place at Pebble Beach in 2011. New, the GTO sold in the United States for $18,000 and buyers had to be personally approved by Enzo Ferrari and his dealer for North America, Luigi Chinetti. Today these rare vehicles (36 in existence) are going for $25 – $30 million.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO
Berlinetta Coupe #3445GT
Beyond red! The distinct blue and yellow colors of this Ferrari 250 GTO reflect its Swedish racing heritage dating back to the 1960s.

Swedish racing driver Ulf Norinder owned the car from 1963-1971, racing the car at the Targa Florio, Monza, Daytona, Spa, Nurburgring, Reims and at a number of Swedish venues. Historians believe that he received direct assistance and entry in several races through SEFAC Ferrari. Norinder also allowed the car to be driven by other famous drivers of the period, including Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon.

This car was featured on the Lokar Car Show 2011.

Toyota Prius (Launched: 1997)
Let’s start with the baby on the list. The Prius is the best-selling hybrid ever. It is the car that proved that a hybrid vehicle can be practical and stylish at the same time. The fuel efficiency of the car remains impressive. The Prius remains a consumer favorite, with nearly 200,000 vehicles sold in the U.S. every year. An argument can be made that the Prius ushered in the wave of eco-conscious cars that have dominated the market this century. It is not too often that a vehicle is launched that shapes the direction of the entire industry. That is exactly what the Prius managed to do.

Jeep Wagoneer

The Cherokee was the first mid-size SUV that was also a practical family car. Land Rover’s Range Rover was the luxury version of the Cherokee, an SUV for the masses. Today, the Cherokee (as the Jeep Grand Cherokee) continues to appeal to families seeking a way to get around in comfort without the hefty price tag. The Cherokee changed the industry in the sense that it changed how a particular type of car was marketed. A mid-size SUV can be comfortable, stylish and affordable. What a concept!

Volkswagen Beetle (Launched: 1938)
The original Beetle set the standard for small cars that still dominate a fuel-efficient auto industry today. The Beetle, which made a resurgence when a new model was unveiled in 1998, is known for its reliability and affordability. The tiny car, created by Ferdinand Porsche, was designed to be a small, affordable car that most people could afford. Mr. Porsche achieved that goal long before automobile companies were embracing the smaller is better concept. The Beetle’s air-cooled engine would serve as inspiration for the Porsche 911.

1964 Ford Mustang

Ford Mustang (Launched: 1964)
The Mustang ushered in the era of the muscle car. Even the competition (the Dodge Challenger and the Chevy Camaro) could not compete with the popularity of the Mustang, which has enjoyed an uninterrupted production run. The new versions may be more streamlined, but it was the Mustang that started America’s long obsession with torque and horsepower. The Mustang put an emphasis on the engine as the cornerstone of the foundation of a car.

Ford Model T (Launched: 1908)
How can this car not be a classic? It is the car that transformed the entire 20th century. The “Tin Lizzie” had an impressive production run of nearly 20 years. It was not the first car ever built, but it was the first car that the average Joe could afford. Thanks to Henry Ford’s assembly line, nearly 20 million of these babies were sold during its lifetime. Even after a century, the Model T remains a true classic. No need to explain how this car, featuring 2-speeds and a rear-wheel-drive engine, changed the industry.

Worth Mentioning

Jaguar XK 120 (1948) – Unveiled at the London Motor Show, this was the fastest production car available at the time. It’s still considered one of the most beautiful cars ever manufactured.

Porsche 911 (1964) – No other sports car has been in production as long as this car — and for good reason. Its sleek look and amazing engine power still standout from the competition today.

AMC Eagle (1980) – One of the first truly successful crossover vehicles, the AMC Eagle combined elements of a passenger car with the more adventures off-road cars of the day.

Dodge Caravan (1984) – The Caravan launched the minivan as a market segment. There is plenty of room for the entire family with child-friendly interiors and other design touches unheard of at the time. The fifth-generation Caravan has been updated to include amenities such as swivel seats, but the general design remains the same.

The advent of the internet has made shopping for a wide variety of goods and services incredibly quick and easy — and buying breakdown cover online is no exception. Compare how long it would take you to ring around your top five breakdown cover companies and ask for a quote to how long it would take to gain the same information online and it’s like night and day.

To go through the quote gathering process via phonecalls would mean you’d have to go through your details on five separate occasions with five different companies just to get a picture of which deal would suit you best. Heading online to get your quotes, on the other hand, is lightning quick in comparison. With the introduction of comparison websites, users can simply enter their details once and have a whole host of offers in front of them in a matter of seconds.

That’s not to say that comparison sites are the be all and end all, however. Certain providers choose not to display their prices on such sites, choosing instead to deal directly with potential customers and passing on a discount that would otherwise have funded commission for the comparison site. With that in mind, it’s worth writing down the companies you’d like to receive quotes from and then seeking out individual quotes if any of them don’t show up on a comparison summary.

Even if you have a couple of others to check once you’ve run a comparison, the speed with which you can receive individual quotes online still makes using your computer to gather information the way to go. And that’s before you even consider the fact that many companies reserve their absolute best prices for online customers — the discounts available compared to phone quotes can be quite surprising.

With all this in mind, it makes complete sense to head online to get your insurance. If you’re unsure with a mouse and keyboard, enlist the help of a family member or friend who is a little more internet savvy. Checking online for breakdown cover quotes is so quick and easy that you’ll find somebody willing to help without any problems at all.

Anyone lucky enough to have driven one of these compact power machines knows the Boxster is one of the most innovative, fun rides on the road. And, like having a gorgeous woman on your arm, it makes you look good.

To great anticipation, Porsche is previewing its third generation of the popular Boxster convertible series. The 2013 Porsche Boxster will come in two versions: the original Boxster and the sportier Boxster S. Both will be powered by flat six engines, direct fuel injection with efficiency increased through electrical system recuperation and thermal management, all capped with an engine start-stop function.

With an eye toward the eco-friendly, the manufacturer has promised the latest model will be approximately 15% more fuel efficient than previous models. So roar down the highway knowing you’re both looking good and doing your part for the environment.

From initial released photographs, Porsche has tipped its cap to the classic 911 ducktail with its latest Boxster model. That wouldn’t be the only notable alteration. It would appear there’s been a dramatic change in the overall design theme. The 2013 Boxster looks to have a defined cab forward stance. The windscreen shifts quite markedly toward the front. The detailed, sculpted flanks offer longer doors. The redesigned wheelhouses can now accommodate wheels 20” in diameter.

Though no specifics have been released as of yet, expect Porsche’s latest model to include standards like cruise control, a cargo net, climate control, power seats, a brilliant Bose system with at least 11 speakers and Bluetooth. Standard safety features include cornering lights, front fog/driving lights, stability and traction control, electronic break force distribution and child seat anchors. Telematics will likely include a voice directed navigation system, phone capability and real time traffic.

Owning a car like this doesn’t come without responsibility though. Be sure before hitting the road, it’s adequately insured. For a machine like this, it won’t come cheap. If you are wondering about the cost to insure this elegant machine, visit Kanetix and do a comparison to see which insurance providers offers the cheapest auto insurance quotes. But you’ve already invested in one impressive vehicle. Is it really time to waffle on protecting it and yourself?

I saw this today and as an enthusiast, my heart sank. One of the least known classic coupes from the late ’60s, the Toyota 2000GT, has been bastardized in the name of the environment.
The 2000GT was a limited production model designed by Toyota, first shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965. In collaboration with Yamaha, the car was built between 1967 and 1970.

Classic and all original Toyota 2000GT.

At the time, the 2000GT was a bit of an anomaly. Toyota was known for boring and practical cars, not sport coupes. Yet here was a two-door, rear-drive hard top built to compete with the likes of Porsche as well as other European sports cars. And compete it did, with Road & Track magazine calling it ”one of the most exciting and enjoyable cars we’ve driven”, comparing it to the 911.

Of the 351 2000GTs made, only 84 were left hand drive. Only 62 of those came to the U.S. market. Less than 40 of those are known to still exist today, making this one of the rarest collector cars in the world.

Excellent examples of the 2000GT have sold for $375,000 at auction. This is arguably the first of only a few collectible Japanese cars.

Last year, a 2000GT appeared on EBay, with an asking price of $650,000. The owner, Peter Starr, was a Toyota dealer in 1969 and became obsessed with the car, owning his first in the mid-1970s. He went on to collect or restore 50 of the 62 U.S. cars.

But here’s one that’s been forever changed, converted to a solar-electric powered car by the Toyota Auto Fan Club. Seems like a group that should be dedicated to preserving Toyota’s automotive heritage, not dismantling it. If you want to dabble in the world of electric cars, please do so but not at the expense of a true automotive classic. Enthusiasts around the world will be happier knowing the icons they love will be preserved.

The “Eyes” have it: Lexus LF-LC named top design concept at Detroit Motor Show

The Lexus LF-LC Hybrid Sport Coupe Concept has proved a head-turning success at theDetroit motor show (NAIAS), being honoured with the annual EyesOn Design Award for best concept car.

It is an excellent reward for the team at Lexus’s Calty studio inCalifornia, which created the 2+2 coupe. Their aim was to explore how a future redefinition of Lexus design might take a more emotive and avant garde approach and harness new and advanced technologies.

Elements of the new Lexus design language introduced in the new GS 450h can be witnessed in the concept, notably the strong interpretation of the “spindle” grille shape and the rear architecture.

Kevin Hunter, Calty President, said: “The LF-LC was a dream car to design and a true collaborative effort at Calty. It is an honour to have that work recognised by our peers and to receive the award.

Mark Templin, Lexus US Group Vice President and General Manager, said: “The LF-LC is a striking design and breathtaking in its beauty. The team at Lexus quickly fell in love with this concept vehicle and it’s rewarding to see that the industry agreed. Receiving the EyesOn Design Award is a great start to what promises to be a fantastic year for Lexus.”

The EyesOn Design Awards are judged by a group of world leading automotive designers and design academics, and are given in recognition of skills and creativity in different areas of design for both concept and production vehicles, including Aesthetics and Innovation, Concept Implementation, Functionailty and the Spirit of Industrial Design.

Since Chrysler is now part of the huge automotive conglomeration that is Fiat, the brand can make use of a giant parts bin, so to speak.

With that, Dodge has introduced the all-new Dart at the Detroit Auto Show. The Dart was made possible with the help of Alfa Romeo, using the Giulietta as the base line for the new compact sedan.

“The all-new Dodge Dart is a groundbreaking car that will surprise and delight customers who want a no-compromise, fun-to-drive car that’s a great value,” said Reid Bigland, President and Chief Executive Officer — Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “With 12 exterior colors, 14 interior color and trim options, three powerful, fuel-efficient engines, three transmission choices, unsurpassed safety features and world-class aerodynamics, the new Dodge Dart sets a new standard for the compact car class.”

OK, that was probably an unnecessary mouthful but Dodge/Chrysler is probably pretty excited about this car. They may actually compete in this segment with a car that looks pretty good. Thankfully, the Dodge styling of recent years didn’t get transferred to the Dart. It looks unique to the brand, the only real indication is the Dodge signature “cross” grill, albeit at a much small scale.

I could do without the Dart name but American car makers are keen to the idea of holding on to old brand names. I guess when you think about it, Dodge probably leads the pack here with the recent rebirth of the Challenger and Charger.

If you so choose to shop the Dart, you’ll have three four-cylinder engines to choose from. There will be a 160 horsepower 16-valve 2.0-liter engine, a 160 horsepower 16-valve 1.4-liter MultiAir® Intercooled Turbo engine and a new 184 horsepower Tigershark 16-valve 2.4-liter MultiAir 2 four-cylinder engine. Standard fare in this segment, even the turbo-charged motor. Force-fed engines are becoming a popular option as manufacturers move more towards efficiency yet want buyers to have the horsepower on tap when necessary.

The transmission choices may be a little more interesting, especially to performance-minded buyers, as all three are six-speeds. But better yet, one is a traditional manual, with another being a dual dry clutch (DDCT) transmission. Two good gear boxes to have available especially with the turbo motor.

You can read the full press release from Dodge next…

January 9, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The 2013 Dodge Dart redefines performance with Alfa Romeo DNA, fuel-efficient powertrains and Dodge’s passion for performance. The all-new Dodge Dart is a thoroughly modern vehicle that’s fuel-efficient, beautifully designed and crafted, agile and fun-to-drive.

Loaded with innovative technology, class-leading safety features and clever functionality, the 2013 Dodge Dart sets a new standard in the compact car segment by offering unmatched personalization, roominess, style, functionality and fun-to-drive dynamics.

The 2013 Dodge Dart will be available in five trim levels: SE, SXT, Rallye, Limited and R/T. It will be built in the United States at Chrysler Group’s Belvidere Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Ill. Production of the 2013 Dodge Dart will begin in the second quarter of 2012.

Performance-inspired design

Exterior
The all-new 2013 Dodge Dart boasts a timeless, stylish and distinctive exterior design. The car sports an athletic, sculpted, fluid and aesthetically agile appearance. The exterior design of the Dart conveys a level of visual drama and timeless surfaces that add excitement to the competitive compact sedan segment in the United States.

“The Dodge Dart was a dream to design,” said Joe Dehner, Head of Dodge Design — Chrysler Group LLC. “The Alfa Romeo-based architecture allowed us to design an exterior with great proportions that say ‘fun-to-drive’ when you look at it. Add in the Charger-inspired ‘racetrack’ taillamps, a new, sleek crosshair grille and piano black accents, and it all adds up to a performance-inspired design with just the right amount of attitude.”

The Fiat Group-based Compact U.S. Wide (CUS-wide) architecture’s low, wide and long dimensions ensured a stable “body-in, wheels-out” stance and coupe-like silhouette. The CUS-wide platform allowed for accentuating the fender formations and pushing the wheels as far out to the corners as possible, creating a very stable look, which gave Dodge designers incredible opportunities for some very dramatic sculpturing. Designers visually stretched the skin of the car over the vehicle framework as if stretching nylon over a surface.

“When designing the all-new Dodge Dart, we were inspired by classic, beautifully designed vehicles throughout time,” Dehner added. “Each car was beautiful, based on its surface work and presence alone; they didn’t need unnecessary cladding, jewelry or lines that confuse the eye.”

Once the basic design was in place, with dynamic lines and curves from every angle, designers inserted a little Dodge attitude into the mix. The face of the Dart was styled with the unmistakable Dodge split crosshair grille, but with a modern, sleek look that “floats” in the front fascia, giving the Dart a full-width mask that marks it as a Dodge.

The rear view of the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart features an available Charger-inspired “racetrack” full-width taillamp with 152 indirect glow LEDs, and class-exclusive dual exhausts mounted in the rear fascia.

The front of the 2013 Dodge Dart has been designed for smooth airflow around, above and below the car without compromising styling or engine cooling requirements. In addition, a lower radiator close-out panel is positioned below the front fascia. This not only contributes to the Dart’s lower front-end appearance, but also reduces drag while still allowing for an 8-inch curb clearance.

Dodge designers made attention to detail and precision craftsmanship a priority, and it is noticeable from every angle. Standard laser-braised roof welds, high-quality metal Daylight Opening (DLO) moldings painted piano black and standard projector headlamps are just a few examples of well-crafted features typically found on much more expensive classes of vehicles.

Tasteful, detailed accents add to the design of the Dodge Dart. Style lines on the hood lead the eye to the floating crosshair grille, while chrome accent spears below the projector headlamps and inboard of available projector fog lamps highlight the attention to detail.

The result is a compact sedan that blends exceptional proportions, “aero-dramatic” surfacing, world-class craftsmanship, modern technology, an exceptionally quiet cabin and an upscale feel in a package that is undeniably a Dodge.

Interior
Dodge designers focused on creating a modern blend of precision craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology, exciting bursts of color and hand-sculpted shapes when designing the Dart’s interior, which is crafted with materials and technology typically found in more expensive vehicle segments. Starting with modern Dodge DNA and through the use of innovative ambient interior lighting, high-quality soft-touch materials and high-tech features, the 2013 Dodge Dart is loaded with cool amenities and unexpected delights for both drivers and passengers.

The Dart’s “driver-centric” layout is designed to put all controls within easy reach of the driver. Customizable displays and comfort-tuned seats are packaged in an exceptionally spacious, pleasing interior. Packaged in the footprint of a compact car, the 2013 Dodge Dart features the interior spaciousness of a mid-size sedan, and it boasts best-in-class hip and shoulder room.

“The all-new Dodge Dart is the showpiece for Dodge’s next generation philosophy of interior design,” said Klaus Busse, Head of Interior Design — Chrysler Group LLC. “The Dart interior takes the beautiful, precision-crafted interiors we rolled out last year and adds a little bit of fun with surprises of color, eye-catching ambient lighting and some really cool technology.”

Customization was key in the all-new Dodge Dart’s development, and with 12 exterior colors, 14 interior color and trim combinations, seven wheel options, three engine options and three transmissions, each Dodge Dart can be personalized by every buyer to fit their individual style. And the combinations are multiplied exponentially, as Mopar® also will offer more than 150 customization options and themed packages specifically developed for the Dart.

The high-tech centerpiece of the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart is the class-exclusive floating island bezel, which houses the segment-exclusive available 7-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) customizable gauge cluster display with light pipe surround that also houses the available class-exclusive Uconnect® Touch 8.4-inch touchscreen Media Center – the largest touchscreen in its class.

Thoughtful storage options throughout fit today’s technology. The glove box easily conceals a stowed iPad; the center console features auxiliary jacks to plug in a wide variety of electronic devices, and thoughtful, inventive storage solutions, such as center console side pockets, are perfect for storing mobile phones, receipts, or pens and paper.

Lighting in all the right places provides drivers and passengers a warm, comfortable cockpit. Available “racetrack” lighting surrounds the floating island bezel. Ambient lighting for the door handles, map pockets, foot wells, glove box, storage bin and illuminated cup holders is both useful and provides a warm atmosphere inside the vehicle.

Three sophisticated, fuel-efficient and powerful engines
The 2013 Dodge Dart will be powered by three fuel-efficient, powerful, state-of-the-art four-cylinder engines that add to Dart’s fun-to-drive quotient.

Drivers can select from a new 160 horsepower Tigershark 16-valve 2.0-liter engine, a 160 horsepower 16-valve 1.4-liter MultiAir® Intercooled Turbo engine and a new 184 horsepower Tigershark 16-valve 2.4-liter MultiAir 2 four-cylinder engine. These three engines, combined with three transmission choices — six-speed manual, six-speed automatic or six-speed dual dry clutch (DDCT) transmission — redefine performance by providing the most diverse powertrain lineup in its class.

MultiAir technology delivers optimum combustion at any speed under all driving conditions by allowing direct and dynamic control of air intake and combustion. The result is up to a 15 percent increase in low engine rpm torque and a 7.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency.

Engineered with passion
The all-new 2013 Dodge Dart was developed and engineered to exceed expectations for satisfaction, quality and reliability. From the world-class aerodynamic performance, to the agile, responsive driving experience, to items seemingly mundane like segment-leading heating and cooling performance that gives drivers and passengers the right temperatures in the right locations and a whisper-quiet interior, Dodge engineers kept the customer top of mind while developing every detail of the Dart.

“The all-new 2013 Dodge Dart has been engineered with a passion that demonstrates Dodge is back in the compact car segment in a big way,” said Matt Liddane, Vehicle Line Executive — Chrysler Group LLC. “The Dart is well-crafted, agile, powered by world-class, fuel-efficient powertrains, loaded with high-tech features that are both clever and useful, and it’s fun to drive.”

Alfa Romeo DNA
The Dodge brand’s re-entry into the U.S. compact sedan segment is based off of the award-winning Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The Giulietta is renowned for satisfying the most demanding customers in terms of road-holding agility and safety, with exceptional driving dynamics. The Giulietta platform was lengthened and widened, creating a spacious compact sedan that meets the wants and needs of North American consumers.

The proven modular architecture allows multiple models to be built using the same basic underpinnings, resulting in improvements in quality and reliability, as well as reducing cost, development timing and tooling. The body structure of the Dart is comprised of 68 percent high-strength steel – hot stamped, high-strength and ultra-high-strength – resulting in an architecture that is lightweight, modern and solid.

The 2013 Dodge Dart features the proven, lightweight MacPherson strut front suspension, specifically tuned to minimize camber loss, resulting in more responsive steering and handling characteristics, improved ride quality and a reduction in road noise – all qualities drivers will appreciate.

A bi-link independent rear suspension enables European handling capability for those drivers who love to lean into corners and the smooth ride North American drivers covet.

World-class aerodynamics
The all-new 2013 Dodge Dart compact sedan was designed and engineered for world-class aerodynamic performance. With more than 600 hours in the wind tunnel during the Dart’s development and using technology typically found on more expensive vehicles, Dodge engineers and designers looked at every aspect from the ground up to optimize the aerodynamic performance of the Dart.

The all-new 2013 Dodge Dart is the first Dodge vehicle to use an active grille shutter system. The system automatically stops airflow through the lower intake at highway speeds when less engine cooling is required and aerodynamic drag is most significant. When closed, the shutter system enhances aerodynamic performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through it. The active grille shutter system will open or close automatically based upon engine coolant temperature and vehicle speed.

Underbody panels run stem to stern on the Dodge Dart, covering the majority of the lower vehicle from the front fascia to the rear fascia. Constructed of mold-in-color (MIC) black composite, the panels both enhance the aerodynamic performance and also block road noise.

Tire spats located forward of the front and rear tires were engineered to function as mini air dams and were optimized for shape and ground clearance, adding to the underbody efficiency in conjunction with the underbody panels.

In the design and engineering of the 2013 Dodge Dart, no aerodynamic detail was too small. Mirror design, the notch angle at the top of the header of the backlight to the trailing edge of the decklid and even the tail lamp applique shape and rear corners were all designed and engineered for optimal aero performance. An integrated decklid spoiler incorporates a trailing edge shape for cleaner airflow separation in the rear portion of the vehicle, which optimizes the air wake.

Class-leading Safety Features
The all-new 2013 Dodge Dart was engineered with 60 safety and security features to ensure driver’s and passengers’ peace of mind when traveling. The Dodge Dart starts with a strong foundation, a body that has a high-strength steel content of 68 percent, one of the highest in the industry, and then adds both active and passive safety features. Driver and passenger safety features include 10 standard airbags, which is unsurpassed in the segment and include: dual-stage adaptive venting front driver and passenger air bags, front-seat-mounted driver and passenger pelvic and thorax air bags, two rear-seat-mounted pelvic air bags, front driver and passenger knee air bags and all-row side-curtain air bags. The Dart also features a reactive head-restraint system; available Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection, three-point safety belts in all five seating positions; front driver and passenger dual seat belt pretensioners at the anchor and retractor positions and active load limiters. These features and more all work to protect passengers in the event of a crash. All three rear seat positions feature Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH).

Additional standard safety features on the 2013 Dodge Dart include:

Brake Assist

With the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C class firmly in their sites, Cadillac introduced the ATS last night at the College for Creative Studies, one of America’s top automotive design schools.

Rather than scavenge an existing platform, Cadillac developed an all-new one, hoping to make the ATS the lightest and best-handling Cadillac’s to date. According to Cadillac, the ATS’ curb weight is slightly less than 3,400 lbs.

“Designed with quick, nimble and fun-to-drive dynamics, ATS expands Cadillac’s portfolio into a crucial global segment,” said Don Butler, vice president of marketing for Cadillac. “For a new group of luxury consumers, this is a car that will fit their lifestyle and challenge the segment’s status quo.”

Getting lighter is always better but intriguing engine choices also help. And it appears Cadillac is going after efficiency as well as performance with ATS power plants.

The base engine will be a 2457cc inline-four with 200 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. Optional engines will include a 1998cc 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and a 3564cc V-6 with 320 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. All engines are cast aluminum and redline at 7000 rpm or higher.

Transmissions for all engine choices will include a traditional six-speed torque converter automatic as well as a Tremec six-speed manual. I think the enthusiast minded buyer definitely has to go for the turbo four with the manual transmission. Not that I’m against a 320 horsepower V-6, which would be loads of fun with the six-speed manual. But the four-cylinder will pull better mileage numbers for you but not give up very much when it comes to performance. And we all know that good old fashioned gasoline is only destined to get more expensive as time goes on.

What do you think? With the looks and power options, can this Cadillac truly compete and defeat the Europeans? On the styling front, I think the ATS looks better, especially when compared to Audi’s A4. Audi has decided to take the looks of their cars in the direction of the bland. It just doesn’t inspire when you’ve got an hour long commute ahead of you!

Cadillac’s press release follows…

DETROIT – Cadillac today introduced the 2013 ATS, an all-new compact luxury sports sedan intended to challenge the world’s best premium cars. Developed on an all-new, lightweight vehicle architecture, Cadillac’s entry into the world’s most significant luxury car segment goes on sale this summer.

The rear-drive ATS brings Cadillac’s blend of technologically driven performance, elegance and design to a new audience of spirited drivers. Its sophisticated driving experience is enhanced with Cadillac CUE, a comprehensive, in-vehicle user experience that merges intuitive design with industry-first controls and commands for information and media data.

The Cadillac ATS is a new expression of Cadillac’s Art & Science execution philosophy, built on a foundation of driving dynamics and mass efficiency. It is the most agile and lightweight Cadillac, with one of the lowest curb weights in the segment – less than 3,400 pounds (1,542 kg).

Germany’s famed Nürburgring served as one of the key testing grounds, along with additional roads, racetracks and laboratories around the globe, ATS engineers balanced performance with Cadillac’s trademark refinement. Contributing components and features include:

Nearly 50/50 weight balance

Cadillac’s first five-link independent rear suspension using lightweight, high-strength steel and efficient straight link designs

A multi-link double-pivot MacPherson-strut front suspension with direct-acting stabilizer bar

Driver-adjustable FE3 sport suspension with Magnetic Ride Control real-time damping

Underbody aerodynamic shields

Premium (belt driven) electric variable-effort steering gear from ZF Steering Systems

Four-channel ABS with available Brembo performance brakes

Available all-wheel drive

“More than just another new entry, the ATS aims to change the status quo of the European-dominated segment,” said Butler. “That is why our approach in all elements of its development is so extensive and focused.”

A broad lineup of engines – including two four-cylinders and a V-6 for North America – delivers strong power to the ATS and capitalizes on the car’s lightweight structure to complement its performance with efficiency. The optional engines include an all-new 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 270 horsepower (201 kW) and Cadillac’s award-winning 3.6L V-6, estimated at 320 horsepower (238 kW).

At 135hp/L, the new 2.0T is one of the most power-dense engines in the industry, topping engines from European competitors. ATS will offer both manual and automatic transmission options, along with rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations.

The ATS will deliver peak highway fuel economy of more than 30 mpg.

A spirit of lightness and balance

Making the ATS one of the segment’s lightest cars was a fundamental criterion for and the guiding principle during its development, but it was done in a nuanced manner that ensures a refined driving experience.

“Low weight gives the ATS a more nimble and controllable feel, while also optimizing the performance and efficiency of the powertrains,” said David Masch, ATS chief engineer. “But we were careful to manage the weight while maintaining Cadillac’s signature levels of refinement.”

Optimizing the ATS’s mass was the result of a four-pronged philosophy that included strict adherence to original architectural goals, measured load management throughout the vehicle, benchmarking components to see if lighter solutions were available and an overall culture that “weighed” the mass of every component in the car against all aspects of its development.

An aluminum hood, magnesium engine mount brackets and even lightweight, natural-fiber door trim panels contribute to the ATS’s low overall mass – and reflect the systematic approach of evaluating every gram that went into the car. But some weight was deemed not only beneficial, but essential to the ATS’s driving experience. An example is the cast iron differential: Engineers found they could improve fuel economy with a cast iron differential rather than a lighter aluminum version.

And while the rear suspension is mostly steel, the focus on load management and straight links enabled significant weight savings without using alternate materials. This helps offset the weight of the engine and transmission at the front of the vehicle, helping the ATS deliver its near-perfect 50/50 weight balance, while also contributing to lower noise and vibration. A similar approach was taken on the wheels, where extra structural aluminum was strategically added to further reduce vibration.

“We approached development by counting all the grams in the ATS,” said Masch. “We minimized them where we could and put them to the best use where they were needed.”

Tailored design weaves in signature style and refinement

The 2013 Cadillac ATS interprets Cadillac’s Art & Science design language in a new proportion, tailoring the signature styling and refinement cues for the most compact Cadillac while upholding – and advancing – the exemplary attention to detail and technological elements for which the brand is known.

A long, 109.3-inch (2,775 mm) wheelbase and wide front/rear tracks are the cornerstones of the ATS’s firmly planted stance, which is enhanced by short overhangs and taut sheet metal that appears to wrap tightly around the tires. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard and 18-inch wheels are available.

Bold vertical lighting elements – including new LED front signature lighting detail – as well as illuminating door handles and active grille shutters lend technologically advanced style and function to the ATS. The grille shutters close at certain highway speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag and enhance fuel economy.

A driver-focused interior with integrated technology and crafted materials complements the exterior elements and supports the ATS’s driving experience. Everything from the placement of the pedals to the position of the shifter is designed for effortless and intuitive performance driving. Available performance seats have power-adjustable bolsters to optimize lateral support during high-load cornering.

Contributing to the interior’s intuitive feel is an instrument panel that wraps into the doors and a center stack in the mid-instrument panel that flows into the center console. LED lighting for the bold gauge cluster enables clear, at-a-glance viewing in all lighting conditions, while ambient lighting accents functional elements of the console and doors.

Real wood, plated metal plating and carbon fiber trim and Cadillac’s cut-and-sew instrument panel, console and doors enhance the emotional connection to the ATS. Choices of many interior color themes, each with unique accent trim material, cover a wide range of flavors – from light, open and warm to black and serious, to bold, technical and sporty.

CUE and ATS technologies

The ATS is offered with Cadillac CUE, a comprehensive, in-vehicle experience that merges intuitive design with auto industry-first controls and commands for information and entertainment data. It is designed to be unique for each consumer, from the “simple user” to the fully connected “super user.”

CUE, which stands for Cadillac User Experience, pairs entertainment and information data from up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices, USBs, SD cards and MP3 players with a vehicle infotainment system that reduces complexity through customized information, voice commands and fewer buttons and larger icons. For example, most of today’s luxury cars have around 20 buttons controlling the radio and entertainment functions. CUE has only four.

The heart of CUE is the eight-inch LCD multi-touch sensitive screen, seamlessly integrated into the top of the central instrument panel and a motorized fully capacitive faceplate at the bottom concealing a 1.8L storage area. The vibrant LCD screen displays CUE’s home page, which resembles a smart phone’s screen by using large, easy-to-target icons to execute commands. Capacitive technology refers to using electrodes to sense the conductive properties of objects, such as a finger.

In addition to CUE, the ATS is offered with other technologies, including:

Bluetooth phone connectivity with voice recognition

USB, auxiliary and SD memory card ports

SiriusXM Satellite Radio with three-month trial subscription

Keyless access and keyless push-button start

Reconfigurable 5.7-inch instrument panel cluster display

Full-color reconfigurable heads-up display.

The ATS is offered as a well-equipped standard model and in Luxury, Performance and Premium Collections. A Bose® Cabin Surround audio system is offered on the standard model, as well as Luxury and Performance Collections. It is standard with the Premium Collection. A navigation system is also available with Luxury and Performance Collections and standard with the Premium Collection.

‘Control and alert’ safety strategy

Safety in the ATS is based on Cadillac’s “control and alert” strategy that employs advanced technologies – including radar, cameras and ultrasonic sensors – to help prevent crashes.

The safety features bolster driver vision and awareness of road hazards, and intervenes to help the driver avert potential crashes. In some cases, Cadillac’s advanced crash-avoidance systems will act without the driver, such as automatic braking, which will activate based on information indicating potential hazards.

Among the most sophisticated of the features is Front and Rear Automatic Brakes. This relies on short-range radar technology and ultrasonic sensors to help the driver prevent front and rear low-speed collisions via a progression of alerts that extend to complete braking, if necessary.

Optional advanced safety features include:

Full Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control

Intelligent Brake Assist

Forward Collision Alert

Brake Pre-Fill Automatic Collision Preparation

Lane Departure Warning

Side Blind Zone Alert

Rear Vision Camera With Dynamic Guidelines

Adaptive Forward Lighting

Hill Hold/Start Assist (Standard, manual transmission)

The advanced technology safety features complement the ATS’s roster of other safety features, including eight standard air bags (10 with optional features), safety belt pretensioners and load limiters, StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control and four-wheel disc brakes with four-channel ABS.

ATS also features OnStar standard for one year. It can use GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of a crash. OnStar service also includes myCadillac and OnStar myLink mobile apps, whichoffer vehicle information, controls and OnStar services via the customer’s iPhone or Android smart phone.
